Biography

Dr. Jules Rutebuka is an expert in land and water management with a strong background in soil erosion control systems/land husbandry, sustainable landscape management, soil fertility, and agriculture production systems. Dr Rutebuka got a BSc degree in Soil Science and Environmental Management from the National University of Rwanda and a MSc degree in Physical Land Resources (soil science) from Ghent University (Belgium). In 2013, he was a visiting lecturer for soil physics and soil fertility management at the University of Rwanda. In 2019, Jules got a Ph.D. in Land and water management, particularly Integrated multiscale assessment of soil erosion and its control in Rwanda from Ghent University (Belgium). Over the past 13 years, he has gained experience in implementing government project development and research initiatives on integrated watershed management, land husbandry and soil erosion control, and integrated soil fertility management at the national scale under the Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Resources (MINAGRI) through its Agency Rwanda Agriculture and Animal resources Development Board (RAB). Since 2020 as Senior Research Fellow, He was leading the development of land, soil and crop information hub namely “Rwanda Soil Information Service (RwaSIS)” for Rwanda under RAB before joining the IUCN as a Regional programme officer on sustainable agriculture. He is passionate about sustainable landscape management, which is the foundation for sustainable agriculture and enhanced food security.
